Unusual types of tourism

We were talking about different types of tourism in the last two classes.  We learned that there is adventure tourism, health tourism, cultural tourism, etc.
In the links below you can read about types of tourism that may not be quite common, but which still attract many enthusiasts.

Read the information in these two links and leave a comment saying which one you would like to try and why and which one sounds totally out of the question for you and why.

  1. I would really like to try the Dark Tourism, but I think just the part of, for example, visiting concentration camps, because all this part of the history about Hitler calls my attention since I studied a couple of years ago at high school and since I read The diary of Anne Frank.
But what attracted me more was the Pop-Culture Tourism. I'm a big fan of movies and have the oportunity to go and see the sets it would be really, really great for me.
On the other hand, I would never, never go on Ghost Tourism. It's just creepy, and I'm a person who gets scared easily with that kind of things.

  2. I would like to try Ghost or Scare Tourism because i feel it's fascinating and i always liked the supernatural or paranormal stuff. I think it's very interesting to enter a haunted house and start to experiment strange things are happening, such as, for example, a person looking at you all the time and things like that. Or going to a place where someone was murdered. That would we awesome and scary too.

  3. Maybe I would like to try the homeless tourism to visit a city like citizen know it, but all the other types of tourism don't attract me. I think slum tourism and disaster tourism is a lack of respect for population who is living there. It's like "go to see how lives the poors".
Dark, ghost and scare tourism are not doing for me because I'm fearful and I don't like supernatural stuff.

  4. I would love trying ghost tourism! I really like listening to supernatural stories, it makes my feel in an unique way. I would like to visit abandoned houses and also a cemetery. Knowing dead people can still be in our lifes in some strange way is very exciting. I don´t like crossword and grave site tourism, both are boring for me.

  5. I would like to do dark tourism because I think that history is very important and interesting, I always want to go to different places when historic facts happen and I would like to do protest tourism, I think is very important that the tourist try to help to solve the problems that the native people live everyday in their country. I wouldn’t do it ghost tourism because I don´t like it and I am very scared of it.

  6. I would like to try the crossword tourism, because i love the puzzles, do crossword, Sudoku’s and these types of games and i never have time to do amount like I want.
I don’t like the slum tourism because for me is not interesting and I think is morbid go to the poor areas to see how they live.

  7. I would like to try the Disaster Tourism because the natural disasters call my attention. Before decided to study Hospitality, I wanted to be a person that study that disasters.
I don't like to try Illegal immigrant tourism because i think that is not correct to stay in a country in an illegal way.

  8. I would like to try Disaster Tourism. Not only because you get to know places where maybe you wouldn’t visit if there has not been a catastrophe but also I think that it’s a good way of helping people who have been damage by the natural disaster. I always liked being useful to those who really need a hand so it’s a good and interesting way of giving a hand. I also liked the idea of Homeless Tourism. Poor people can’t travel and get to know our style life so why don’t we visit them and get to know some of the sad reality every country faces and has to deal with every day? Moreover, as the text states, we will be helping a homeless person by letting him be the guide and learning from him. This will motivate people who are unemployed and make them feel usefull.
I would not like to try Pop-Culture Tourism, nor Grave Site Tourism. Although I really enjoy watching films and listening to music, I think I wouldn´t spend money on some activity of getting to know places which are not of my interest or does not teach me anything about life, historic anecdotes.

  9. About me I would like to try the pop culture tourism. I think that it's the least creepy tourism of the list. It's an hobby more healthy than the others. You would travel enjoing places where they produce movies, series. I do think that it is a type of tourism where you would learn a lot about litterature culture, cinema culture and of course about the country and costums of its population. You would meet people with the same interests.

  10. In my case, i thing that i really want to know The Slum Tourism because i thing is interesting to know types of citys that have a controvercial places to travel. Sometimes the tourism is not only to know beautiful places or luxury hotels. I thing that the important idea of tourism is to know places that give you a good memory, things that you dont forget. This type of tourism is different because is a live experience where we can value things and we can to realize that in some places happen things that we do not know and understand. For example in The Favelas of Brasil, there are persons that dont have the facilities of being able to work or live comfortably. There are many poor peaple. I think that maybe in a trip of these you can learn and at the same time help the other ones. In India or Africa you can found The Slum tourism. For example in Mombai you can go to beautiful and history places but in the same time you can see sad things and a lot of poverty. A good example of this tourism can be the movie Slumdog Millionaire.
Many people criticize this type of tourism because is not a good way of entertainment but i desagree with that estatement beacuse in my opinion this type of experiences give you a different point of view of things that you took for granted your whole life.

  11. Any of those types of tourism really caught my attention, but if I have to choose one, it would be the Homeless Tourism or the Pop-Cultural Tourism. Why? Because for the homeless tourism would be a great experience to get in touch with people with not the same resourses as we have, and try to know a little about them. Taking about the Pop-Cultural, I think that being on where an extraordinary film was set up, will be amazing, reliving every scene of the movie from where you are.
On the other hand, I won´t try ghost tourims, as I´m not keen on ghost stories. so I won´t be interested on visiting those places related with ghosts or somo paranormal activity.

  12. Of those types of tourism I'd like to try Dark Tourism, because you can visit historical places where important things happened, of course that most of those places are grim and somber, but I think that going to the concentration camps, especially would be a experience that I would like to try. Those are places for awareness.

I would never try slam tourism, that type of travel is for me going to seeing the low-income people suffer, of course that it is awarness, but I think that there are a lot of things to do for them instead of go and watch them.

  13. I think the most interesting tourism for me is the homeless tourism, because I thing it´s a good way to know and see others places of the city you're visiting, and not just the usual ones. Also the guide could give you some real information about the social injustices and other importants issues.
The tourism which is out of the question for me, no doubts,is crossword turism. It's boring just thinking about it!! I can't figure how people can do that often, for me it´s for an hour or two, no more than a day!!

  14. With the different types of tourism, I would like to perform at one end; pop-culture tourism, as it would revive a beautiful experience of the places that have movies and music, and other homeless Tourism: For it would be interesting to see another view of the city received him in the first person experience. And I definitely would not do ghost tourism, since I dislike the whole subject of ghosts and paranormal activity.

  15. I would chose pop-culture tourism because I'm really interested in international icons and bands. I would be able to know their history in another area that is expeccialy built for that.
I wouldn't chose the ghosts tourism because im scared of them and I don't find them funny at all.
In another hand I find slum tourism kind of selfless but also ugly. In my opinion its good to know about their lives and perhaps helping them but its also shocking. We have to be mentally prepared because if not their ways or culture would be really ugly and different. Of course changes a lot if you want to be there for help or just for knowledge. (It turns to be a lack of respect or a constructive visit).

  16. The way of turism that make me curious is the Homeless Turism in London. Although I dindn't like Slum Turism, because I find it inhumn, I see the first one like a way to help poor people and at the same time to see parts of the city that maybe in the tour guide by a professional couldn't see.
As I see it; Slum Turism is kind of morbid. People see how bad are the conditions in which people live, but they don't do anything to help.

  17. I would like to try "homeless tourism" , why ? For two reason, to walk for a mile in the homeless'shoes people and because I am a person who wants to do more than just visiting. Personaly I find out that "Dark Tourism" is totaly out question, its a type of tourism that brings, sadness and depression, even anger for some people . And as long as one lives, you don't look out for these things, they always come spontaneously.

  18. I would like to try dark tourism because I think it's a great way to keep history alive. It raises awareness by reminding us of what happened and how much people suffered.
On the other hand, I wouldn't like to try grave site tourism for, in my opinion, there are other better ways to honor people than visiting their graves.

  19. In my opinion, the dark tourism is the most attractive because you can explore wonderful cities and also learn much of the history of the world and how the people suffered that is very important but I wouldn´t do on a holiday of fun, I would do it as a journey to spread my knowledge. And I wouldn’t do ghost tourism because I am a very scary girl and i think it isn´t fun.

  20. I’ve always loved all kind of esoteric things, as mystery, the occult and paranormal, etc. When I was a child I used to watch with my grandmother a channel called “Infinito” which has recently changed to a new approach aimed at inspiration, wonder and teachings of events and people in the real world that have surpassed what is expected to in fiction. There was a program which was all about haunted houses, and told the stories of the ghosts that haunted those houses. I grew up with this, that’s why I would like to try Ghost Tourism.
The one I think I would never try it is disaster tourism. I am so sensitive, that I’d be always crying and feeling bad with myself, and for me that is not a good idea of vacations. I want to go to a nice place where I can relax myself or have another type of emotions.

  21. I would like to try pop-culture tourism. I would love being in the places where everything in the movies "happened". Once I went to a museum that look like sherlock holmes's house in the famous Baker street.
I would never try grave sites tourism because I think is very boring visit famous's graves. I wouldn't enjoy it because it isn't interesting for me.

  22. The type of tourism that i would like to try would be disaster tourism as well as homeless or slum tourism. I definitely think that it is a really open-minded experience for everybody and it can make people more concious about other realities. However, i believe that people have to make those types of tourisms in an active way, not just looking around passively. Well said in this article, i think that people should do more than just scratch the surface of a place they visit.
On another hand, i would hate to do ghost tourism, because it makes me really scared.

  23. I would like to try Disaster Tourism because I was always interested in natural disasters and its consecuences. I supose that people who visit cities which were destroyed by nature must feel the adrenaline that the habitants of that city felt in that moment. I think that that kind of experience must be shocking but interessant at the same time.
By the other hand, I would never like to try Grave Site Tourism. I find it boring, walk and walk seeing graves with names and dates...that's not for me.

  24. I'm Lara Menazzi
I would like to try Dark Tourism, but only concentration camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau because I find that so interesting and the story of Hitler and what he did to the jews, and the story of that ones who saved about that catastrophe. I like Ghost tourism too because I was always fascinated about ghosts. I love them, I see all the programs about ghosts and haunted houses.
About the others types of tourism, I would never try any of the bizarre tourism, I find it so boring and unnecessary

  25. I would try the homless tourism. I think its interesting to get to know another side of the cities. Doing this type of tuorism, you are also helping a homless guy to have an honest and a good job to be able to sustain himself, instead of begging on streets.

Another unusual type of tursim that i would like to do is the pop tourism, to get to know places where our idols lived, book references and much more.

  26. I realy would like to do the Ghots Tourism becouse i love the idea of paranormal stories and know the places where those sotories took place is very exciting, the only problem is that i am a very scary person.
An other type of unusual tourism i would do is the Dark Tourism i always interested about history but specialy the 2° war wolrd history about Hitler chasing the Jews and the stories of those poor people who had that terrible end; i would like to visit the batle fields and the consentration camps.
I like the idea of the Grave Site Tourims and i will like to do it, visit the graves to pay my respects to those pleople who i admire like Freddy Mercury, Jhon Lennon, people who inspire me like Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, etc. Also its crazy the idea to be near the people who inspired you every day for his songs an actions that they did.

  27. Everything is experience but if this experience doesnt generate satisfaction or happiness i dont consider something as cost effective. I mean, its out of question going into places where there were ghostly apparitions because im a very scary person but I have a personal interest in the dark history of countrys and even if their story left prints so i would do dark turism.

  28. On the one hand, I would love to try ghost tourism. I know people who did it, and they loved it! Of course that is only for people who like that kind of stuff. If you don't, that would be like being in hell. But for me, that would be something very interesting and an unique experience.
On the other hand, something that sounds really out of question to me is the disaster tourism. For me, travelling and holidays are things that should be pleasant for one, and going to disaster places is very sad.
